Dinosaurs are creatures who lived on our planet millions of years before people existed. They are all dead now. We only know about them from their bones and fossils that have been uncovered and studied.
Scientists can figure out how old bones are by measuring the amount of carbon in the bones. This is called carbon dating. Based on carbon dating the bones found, we know that dinosaurs lived on Earth for over 160 million years, from the Triassic period around 230 million years ago through the Jurassic period and until the end of the Cretaceous period around 65 million years ago.
There were many different kinds of dinosaurs. Some were very big. Some were small. Some had wings and flew like birds. Some lived mostly under water. Some had spikes and horns. Some had massive jaws and very sharp teeth. Some ate meat. Others ate only plants.
The two pictured here are different kinds of dinosaurs. The dinosaur in the front of this coloring picture is a Stegosaurus. You can tell by the bony plates that run down it’s back. However, it’s a badly drawn stegosaurus. Real stegosauruses have a long tail with big spikes on the end (not pictured here).
The dinosaur in the back of this coloring picture is a brontosaurus.
