Candy Canes have been around since around the turn of the 17th century. They began as plain white colored sugar sticks. Around the year 1670 the plain white sugar sticks were bent to resemble a shepherd’s staff and passed out during the Christmas celebration at the Cologne Cathedral in Germany. From there, the crooked candy spread throughout Europe.
By the year 1800 plain white candy canes had spread to America. The canes did not receive their familiar red and white stripes until sometime around 1900. Around this same time, peppermint flavor was added to the Candy Cane.
Today Candy Canes come in all sorts of different colors and flavors. What color will you make yours?
